Every CEO faces the same fundamental question: Do I have the right team in place to scale this business?

Getting the right talent in executive roles matters a great deal. But the structure of those roles matters too. Namely, the ideal executive team matches the underlying structure of a business, with its six core areas. Each of those areas needs a dedicated executive champion at the leadership table, just as a building needs load-bearing walls in specific configurations to remain standing.

In some cases, you can add one or two more executives if required by the specifics of your industry. But it’s hard to have fewer than these six once you’re past the early phases of the business without creating dangerous blind spots that will eventually compromise your business.

And as CEO, if you don’t have each of these executives in place, reporting directly to you, you are the de facto head of that function until you fill the role.
