Last week saw most of us, the business world included, in the remnant of holiday haze. That meant we had a very light earnings-call calendar.

So instead of looking at several earnings calls, this week let’s turn our attention to a rather interesting M&A call about the merger of two New York / New Jersey regional banks.

The $579 million all-stock merger of OceanFirst Financial and Flushing Financial is expected to close in Q2. It was one of the last announcements of a busy year for bank M&A, the busiest since 2021 in fact.

Below we’ll examine:

  • the profiles of the involved parties

  • the rationale for the deal, and

  • some of the artful messaging that happened in the call.
