This happens in higher education all the time. People are hired into roles because they’re experts in their fields or have shown dedication to their jobs. However, most times, they get promoted without any real management training.

In many cases, consistent one-on-ones are rare until performance review time, and in my experience, employees sometimes end up doing their own reviews, with managers just signing off.

YEP! It’s wild how rare consistent one-on-ones are. It’s something that’s relatively easy to establish as an expectation of all people managers in a company, but most don’t do it. The good news is that the orgs that do hire and train good managers have a real advantage.
